The
induction motor is one of the most familiar and
most utilized items of industrial equipment
today. However, it is well known that the
start-up of the traditional induction motor is
associated with a number of problems.
First, the high inrush current usually
seen during the start-up of the motor can
cause problems to the power network, while the
rapid increase of torque can cause damage
to the associated drive machine. When a motor
is started with full voltage, the inrush current
can be as high as 5 to 9 times that of the rated
current of the motor. Furthermore, the motor is
often accelerated to full speed in a fraction of
a second, increasing the risk of damage to the
drive mechanism.
Several types of motor starters have been
designed in an attempt to minimize these
problems. Voltage reduced starters such as the
Y-∆ starter are designed to reduce the inrush
current and slow the rapid increase of torque
during start-up. However, while improved, these
starters fall short of being ideal. Using the
Y-∆ starter, the inrush current can remain as
high as 3-5 times that of the rated current,
which is still too high for the power network to
bear. As a result, normal operation of related
electrical equipment may be affected. For
example, a larger transformer may be required to
cope with the high inrush current. Increasing
the size of a transformer is very costly and can
result in larger demand charge due to the high
inrush current. Furthermore, this type of
starter still increases the torque too rapidly
and can cause damage to the drive mechanism.
The solution to this is to design and implement
the ideal soft starter. ECODRIVER has made use
of thyristors to control the voltage to the
motor, thereby further decreasing the inrush
current and dramatically slowing the
acceleration of the motor.
In addition to start
problems, an intrinsic problem of a traditional
induction motor is that it consumes more
energy than is needed at partial load. For
almost 30 years, there have been many attempts
to reduce the power consumption of an induction
motor at partial load. ECODRIVER is dedicated
to designing a motor optimizer that optimizes
the power consumption of an induction motor.
The ECODRIVER energy saving motor optimizer is
able to cope with the potentially complicated
load change of a motor. Because of its unique
design, ECODRIVER motor optimizers are widely
used in oil pump jacks and numerous other
applications.
